PURIM GUIDE
5786 / 2026
Purim is asking for us to be EMBODIED. It’s asking for a somatic release. Whether that’s becoming “b’sumei” - incensed or full of wine or elevated; whether that's having a huge massive feast with friends; or giving out gifts and tzedakah without limit; or masking and playing and pretending - this is an experience of massive and collective release.
Purim isn’t intellectual - it’s lived, it’s felt. It’s about play, and gathering, experimenting.
The Purim story is full of uncertainty, power plays, fear, hiddenness, and survival. And somehow the tradition responds with laughter, costumes, too much food, satire, gifts, and showing up for each other. It feels almost defiant. Like we’re saying, we’re still here. We’re still telling our stories. We’re still feeding one another. We’re still choosing to celebrate.
My hope, as always, is to make this holiday make a little more sense. May it give us collective ritual to make space for the unexpected and helps us shake off control and certainty.
Enjoy this free Purim Guide, which invites you into some of the rituals of Purim and ways to celebrate which feel fitting - and even supportive- for these times.
