AJS Summer Gathering 5786
With Rabbi Daniel Raphael Silverstein
What is this course?
We're very excited to be gathering together for two special hours in NYC! Our time together will be spent connecting, learning Torah about our inner work, sharing, reflecting and meditating. The theme of our learning and practice will be the sombre fast day of Tisha B'Av, the Ninth of Av, (which begins at nightfall) and the journey onwards that day ushers in, of loving reconnection and healing. Tisha B'Av marks the destruction of both ancient Temples in Jerusalem, whose function was to provide much-needed balance, wholeness and connection to our Source for the entire world. However, Tisha B'Av is not the end of the story. Rather, it is a powerful example of what our mystics call "a descent for the sake of an ascent." It is an opportunity to feel what is broken or lacking in ourselves and our world, in order to to deepen our journeys of healing and return to our highest selves (Teshuvah). Six days after Tisha B'Av, we arrive at Tu B'Av, an often overlooked mini-festival of love that is one of the most consoling, joyful and beautiful days in our entire calendar. Tu B'Av offers an opportunity to experience the healing power of love, and set our course of return to our best selves, in preparation for the upcoming New Year and Yom Kippur. Together we'll explore both days, the journey between them, and the invitation that they offer us. I hope that if you're in the area, you'll join us for this rare and precious opportunity to learn, practice and connect in person.
